Some traditions are simply too important to be left behind. After nearly ten years away, Trilj Local Festival made a highly successful comeback last summer, quickly reclaiming its place as one of the highlights of Trilj's cultural calendar. Packed riverside walkways, enthusiastic competitors and an atmosphere that brought back memories of generations past confirmed what many had already felt - this was an event the town had truly missed.

Now, on Sunday, 2 August, beginning at 1 p.m., the banks of the Cetina River and Trilj's City Park will once again become the stage for a full day of competition, celebration and community spirit.

Organised by the City of Trilj and the Trilj Tourist Board, in partnership with the Trilj Volunteer Fire Department, this year's programme combines traditional games, sporting contests, authentic local cuisine and an evening concert by one of Croatia's most celebrated bands - TBF.

The competitive programme begins with a slingshot competition for children, followed by two qualifying traditional boat races for men, the ever-popular "swim for the carp" challenge, the spectacular rope climb for a prosciutto prize, a women's exhibition boat race, and finally the men's grand final and award ceremony.

These competitions were once the hallmark of Trilj's summer celebrations and last year's revival proved that their appeal has not faded. They once again attracted competitors, passionate supporters and visitors who lined the banks of the Cetina throughout the afternoon. This year, organisers expect even greater interest, particularly in the traditional boat races, which have already attracted exceptional demand.

But the Trilj Local Festival is about much more than competition. Its true character comes from the people who bring it to life. Throughout the day, members of the Trilj Volunteer Fire Department and the Jelinak Mountaineering Society will prepare complimentary local specialties for visitors, including traditional bean stew, kettle-cooked meat dishes and freshly grilled sardines. The aromas of homemade food, long communal tables and relaxed conversations beneath the trees of City Park create the atmosphere that makes this festival something to experience rather than simply watch.

Once the competitions conclude and the winners receive their awards, the celebration continues with live music. From 8 p.m., the stage belongs to TBF, one of Croatia's most influential and beloved bands. Their performance will provide the perfect finale to a day that celebrates everything Trilj is known for - community, authenticity and experiences that bring together locals and visitors alike.

According to Carmen Marcela Perica, Director of the Trilj Tourist Board, last year's edition proved that the festival has a bright future: “Last year, we didn't simply bring an event back to the calendar - we brought back the sense of togetherness that has always been part of it. The response from our community, the number of participants and the atmosphere along the Cetina showed that the Trilj Local Festival once again belongs in the hearts of the people of Trilj. This year's edition is therefore much more than another event; it is the continuation of a story we hope will grow stronger year after year.”

She adds that the goal is to preserve the festival's authenticity while making it equally appealing to new generations of visitors.

“The Trilj Local Festival reminds us that traditions don't belong only in history books or old photographs. They can still be vibrant, joyful and open to everyone who wants to take part. That is why we are especially pleased that this year's programme combines traditional competitions and local gastronomy with a concert by TBF. It is precisely this blend of heritage and contemporary culture that gives the festival its unique character."

The organisers invite everyone to spend 2 August in Trilj - cheering on the competitors, sampling local flavours and enjoying one of Dalmatia's most authentic summer celebrations. Because some traditions do not need to be reinvented, they simply need to be brought home.

The project has been financed through the Fund for Tourism Underdeveloped Areas and the Continental Tourism Development Programme, based on a decision of the Croatian National Tourist Board’s Tourism Council, following the recommendation of a committee composed of representatives of the Croatian National Tourist Board, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Croatia, and members of the Tourism Council of the Split-Dalmatia County Tourist Board.
